Glucagon/Baqsimi Update for 2025-2026 School Year

Glucagon is an emergency medication used to treat low blood sugar for people with Type 1 Diabetes.  Glucagon is now available in 2 preparations: inhaled (Baqsimi) and injectable (Glucagen).  The vast majority of students will now have the inhaled (Baqsismi) product as part of their emergency management plan. Baqsimi does not require the yearly update for designated school staff as the injectable version does. A review of Baqsimi administration can be found at How to use BAQSIMI – Baqsimi

There may be a few students that have injectable glucagon (Glucagen) as part of their emergency plan. Public health remains available to provide the yearly training to the staff members working with these students. Please reach out to healthyschools@islandhealth.ca if you have a student that has the injectable (Glucagen) in the emergency management plan and Public Health will arrange for the annual training for staff supporting these students.
