SUMMARY:2017 Mindfulness Course for Educators - Information Session
DESCRIPTION:Information Session: To ensure that this program is a good fit for you at this time\, interested participants must attend a 1 hour orientation on Tuesday Nov 22nd from 3:45-4:45pm in the Cedar Hill Middle School Library. \nWeekly Sessions Mondays 3:45-5:45 pm from Jan.30 – Mar.20 (note: the 3rd class is on Tues.Feb.14th)\nDay-Long Retreat All day class on Saturday March 11th from 9am-3pm \nCost: $45 \nObjective: To provide educators with a firm grounding in mindfulness based strategies that can be incorporated into daily life and in the classroom. \nTeaching mindfulness to youth is significantly enhanced and more effective when it stems from a base of personal practice. The first 8 weeks of this course will help participants develop a personal mindfulness practice to deepen self-awareness\, lower stress and increase overall well-being by learning: \n\nfoundations of mindfulness theory and practice\nawareness of patterns of thought\, speech and behaviour\nskills for meeting and navigating intense emotions\npractices that cultivate positive states of mind like gratitude\, self-compassion and kindness\nhow mindfulness influences communication and relationships\n\nClassroom support \nAfter completing the “8 week personal practice course”\, teachers will participate in 3 bi-weekly classes to learn more about the research on mindfulness in education and discover tools and strategies that can be used to teach mindfulness in the classroom. \nEach class will include a personal practice but will focus on developing tools\, language and ideas for bringing mindfulness into the classroom. Participation is essential to get the most out of this enriching and shared experience\, as participants will be asked to answer prompting questions\, ask their own questions\, and share their experience in the classroom. \nThese classes will also touch on how mindfulness strengthens the aspects of “Positive Education” and how it enhances social-emotional learning and well-being for both students and staff. Tuesdays – April 4\, April 18\, May 2 \nFor more information contact Lisa Baylis lbaylis@sd61.bc.ca \n
