The Healthy Schools Resources page includes links to resources available as pdf files and to useful sites in the area of school health.

  • Healthy, Safe and Caring Schools Resource Guide 2009 (pdf file*)
    This Resource Guide is now updated for 2009 and is designed to enhance the collaboration between schools, students, educators and the community. Local youth serving community agencies are listed with a description of their school resources including presentations, workshops, and speakers. Also included are sources for Canadian and local school grants and funding.
  • Resources to Support Healthy Eating in Schools
    These resources support the implementation of the Ministry of Education's Guidelines for Food and Beverage Sales in B.C. Schools. The Guidelines were implemented in Elementary Schools in January 2008 and Middle and Secondary Schools in September 2008. If you require further support or would like a PAC presentation, please contact the Healthy, Safe and Caring Schools Office.
  • Healthy Eating at School Website
    This website, which has recently been revised, contains school nutrition resources and is presented by the BC Dairy Foundation, ActNow BC and the Knowledge Network. The website now features the draft version of the latest resource titled Tips and Recipes for School Food Services: Meeting the Guidelines for Food and Beverage Sales in BC Schools.
  • Healthy Schools Network Newsletters
    The November 2008 Healthy Schools Network Newsletter has been recently posted (see pdf file*) and includes: Daily Physical Activity School Stories, a Report from the Healthy Schools Network Foundational Meeting 2008 and a Listing of New Resources on the BC Healthy Schools Network Website.
  • Common Sense Media Website
    Common Sense Media Website is a good resource for parents and teachers to rate movies, books, games, etc. for age specific suitability.
  • Guidelines for Promoting Health in Schools (pdf file*)
    International School Health Expert Dr. Lawrence St. Leger just released the second version of Guidelines for Promoting Health in Schools. The Guidelines draw on the best available research, evidence and good practice in school health. They were produced through a process of discussion and consultation with health and educational professionals around the world.
  • Ministry of Education’s Green Schools Initiative
    The Ministry of Education’s Green Schools Initiative has created several new classroom resources to support teachers. The Environmental Learning and Experience Interdisciplinary Guide for teachers provides teaching and learning principles for integrating environmental learning in all K-12 classrooms.
  • Healthy Choices Webpage
    Healthy Choices is a coordinated and integrated teaching resource for students in Kindergarten to Grade 10. This resource contains age appropriate, scope and sequenced lessons on a variety of health topics including healthy eating, physical activity, body image, communication, abuse prevention, communicable diseases, sexual development and tobacco use. These classroom resources can now be downloaded from the Healthy Choices webpage.
  • Dial-a-Dietitian Website
    Dial-a-Dietitian has dedicated full-time staff to answer questions regarding implementing the Guidelines for Food and Beverage Sales in B.C. Schools (including where a particular food would fit). The number is 1-800-667-3438. Dial-a-Dietitian also has a new website, www.brandnamefoodlist.ca, which includes a list of brand name foods and the category they fall under. You can also enter a food product and it will determine the category for you.
  • Legal Guide for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (pdf file*)
    Parent Support Services has launched their legal guide for grandparents raising grandchildren. This in-depth guide examines different scenarios of grandparents raising/supporting their grandchildren, and looks at parental responsibility, child protection law, custody arrangements, financial support, and many other issues.
  • An Ounce of Prevention Revisited (pdf file*)
    This report by the Provincial Health Officer reviews health promotion and selected outcomes for children and youth in B.C. schools and is an update of the October 2003 report. See Archives for October 2003 report.
  • The Cellbertons in What's Diabetes? Facilitator’s Guide (pdf file*)
    This Facilitator’s Guide, which accompanies the animated presentation, provides teachers and others working with children ages 6 to 9 with additional information about diabetes.   • Activity Overload and Stress in Children (pdf file*)

  • Ministry of Education, Healthy Schools Website
    Information about the B.C. initiative to enhance the health and education outcomes of B.C.'s youth is available at this website.
  • BC Medical Association - Family Health and Wellness Webpage
    The BCMA website includes a new Family Health and Wellness page which covers various health topics throughout the year and includes links to resources and to their Healthy Kids Campaign.
  • The NEW Canada Food Guide Website
    The Food Guide was developed through widespread consultation with approximately 7,000 stakeholders including dietitians, scientists, physicians and public health personnel with an interest in health and chronic disease prevention.
  • Create My Food Guide Website
    This interactive website helps individuals personalize the information found in Canada's New Food Guide. By entering your age, gender, and selecting various foods and types of physical activity you can create a tool which is customized to your specific needs and preferences.
  • The Virtual Grocery Store Website
    Dietitians of Canada and the Canadian Diabetes Association have created this site which teaches students how to read nutrition labels. Print off the Nutrition Label Basics and then play along on a virtual shopping tour through an on-line grocery store.
  • The ActNow BC Initiative Website
    The ActNow BC Initiative will make new tools available to parents and teachers to encourage children and youth to be more physically active. The new resources include: Healthy Living for Families Guides which will arrive in B.C. schools shortly and can be downloaded at the Healthy Schools - Resources Webpage; Health Matters Teacher Resources aligned with the Health and Career Education curricula (Grades 8- 10 will be ready for implementation in September 2007. K-7 will be ready in September 2008); and Healthy Living Performance Standards which will outline appropriate health knowledge for each grade level.
  • D.A.S.H. Website
    D.A.S.H., the B.C. Directorate of Agencies for School Health, is a coalition of local, regional and provincial organizations and individuals advocating for programs, services and research to promote Comprehensive School Health.
  • Ministry of Education Healthy Schools - Publications Webpage
    Publications available include the recently released report, Guidelines for Food and Beverage Sales in BC Schools, and other resources on school health.
  • Anxiety Disorders Association of BC Website
    The Association's new website for parents and helping professionals includes practical strategies and tools to help manage children's anxiety as well as videos describing the different types of anxiety disorders.
  • Against the Odds: A Profile of Marginalized and Street-Involved Youth
    This new McCreary Centre Society report summarizes the results of surveys with marginalized youth in the North, Interior, Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island and Vancouver. It also serves as a follow-up to McCreary's 2000 health survey of marginalized and street-involved youth in six communities across B.C.
  • McCreary Centre Society Fact Sheets
    The McCreary Centre Society now has Fact Sheets, based on research from the latest Adolescent Health Survey, available for downloading. Topics include: sexual behaviour, connections to school, safety and violence, harassment and discrimination, emotional health, and injuries. McCreary encourages the use and duplication of these Fact Sheets.
  • High Risk Drinking Web Resource
    The Canadian Public Health Association has launched a web resource that provides factual information about the harms associated with high risk drinking. The site links teachers to classroom resources. Youth played a key role in the development of this resource.
  • Sport Fit Website
    At this website is an easy online sport education and fitness motivation program. The program matches students' personal preferences with a number of summer and winter sports.
  • Evidence: Preventing Harms From Substance Use in BC (pdf file*)
    This publication is available from the Centre for Addictions Research of BC website.
  • www.sexualityandu.ca Website
    This website provides a wealth of credible and up-to-date information and education on sexual health. Administered by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada, the site has sections for teens, adults, parents, teachers and health professionals and features links to many resources in the sexual health area.
  • Sifting Through the Layers DVD and Facilitator Resource Package Webpage
    This resource, Sifting Through the Layers DVD and Facilitator Resource Package, was produced by a group of youth and is available for purchase from the Inter-Cultural Association. It is a stimulating learning tool which provides insightful skits and personal views that explore issues of race, identity, diversity and discrimination. The cost is $25.   • Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute Report (pdf file*)
    According to recent data released by the Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute, 91% of Canadian children and youth are not meeting the guidelines set forth by Canada's Physical Activity Guides for Children and Youth. The Guidelines state that children should be accumulating 90 minutes per day of moderate to vigorous physical activity - or the equivalent of 16,500 steps.
  • Learning and Living Through Loss Brochure and Information Sheet (pdf files*)
    Learning and Living Through Loss is a program in the Capital Region for youth ages 13 to 19 who are experiencing grief and loss. Referrals for Living and Learning Through Loss are currently being accepted.
  • The Hero In You Website
    The Hero In You, a program of the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame, is a web-based teaching resource that profiles B.C.'s sport heroes and their triumphs. The program is designed to motivate, inspire and encourage young people to be the best they can be regardless of their backgrounds, abilities or aspirations and to help them become active, healthy citizens who make positive contributions to their communities.
  • Crystal Meth Victoria Society Website
    Crystal Meth Victoria Society is a registered non-profit society which aims to reduce the spread of crystal meth use in the community through education and outreach support efforts. You can be a part of the solution by: volunteering with the community task forces through the Society website; watching for information in the media and on the website about public meetings; donating to the Society to support its ongoing efforts to educate and coordinate services.
  • Web Safety and Web Awareness Websites
    Childnet International has developed a wide range of resources and award-winning online projects to promote positive and creative ways for kids to use the Internet. See also the advice on Web Safety and Awareness which students attending the sessions on Web Safety at the Building Bridges Conference, April 29, 2005 prepared for other students.
  • The Canadian Teacher Website
    The Canadian Teacher Website lists many free resources available to educators.
  • Eat Well, Play Well, Stay Well Program Webpage
    B.C. physicians are offering to speak to parent groups in their community through the Eat Well, Play Well, Stay Well Program. The 20 minute presentations cover healthy eating, physical activity, and chronic disease prevention in children.   • BC Centre for Social Responsibility Website
    The BC Centre for Social Responsibility is a provincial resource centre located at the University College of the Fraser Valley (UCFV). The centre develops training and educational opportunities, evaluates programs, services and strategies, and conducts research in the area of social responsibility.
  • Institute for Safe Schools (ISS) of BC Website
    The Institute for Safe Schools (ISS) of BC is located at the University College of the Fraser Valley (UCFV). The website includes links to resources, workshops and conferences for parents, educators, police officers and students to support the creation of safe and socially responsible schools and communities.
  • New Treatment for Head Lice
    Health Canada recently approved a non-pesticide product for the treatment of head lice. Resultz works by dissolving the waxy exoskeleton covering the body of the louse, dehydrating the parasite and causing it to die.
  • Options Pregnancy Centre
    Options Pregnancy Centre is a non-profit, independent counselling/resource centre offering information, free pregnancy tests, free counselling, and a website with current information.
